Baked Italian Sandwich

This is one of the BEST sandwiches I have had in a long time.  It tasted like something I would get at a sandwich shop and believe me . . . I would pay money for this one.  Incredible.

It even tastes just as good leftover.

I wish I could eat this every single day for lunch!

Nuff said.
Baked Italian Sandwich
adapted from: Shugary Sweets
(Printable Recipe) or (Printable with Picture)

2 pkgs. crescent rolls
2 c. fresh spinach
1/4 lb. deli Genoa salami, sliced
Cheddar cheese, sliced
1/2 lb. deli black forest ham, thinly sliced
1/2 jar roasted red peppers, patted dry and chopped
2 Tbl. chopped green onions, opt.
1 tsp. dried oregano
1 tsp. Italian seasoning
S&P
4 eggs
1/4 c. Parmesan cheese, freshly grated
1/2 tsp. Johnny's garlic seasoning (or garlic powder)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Grease a 9-inch springform pan with cooking spray.  Unroll one package of crescent roll dough and line the bottom of the springform pan; pressing seams together to seal.  Layer with one cup of fresh spinach, followed by the salami, sliced Cheddar cheese (as much as desired), deli ham, roasted red peppers and green onions.  Top with remaining one cup of spinach.  Sprinkle with oregano, Italian seasoning, salt and pepper.  Beat three eggs with a fork and pour evenly over the top.  Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.

Last, unroll the remaining package of crescent rolls and cover top.  Pinch seams together the best you can.  Beat remaining egg and brush over the top of the crescent dough.  Sprinkle with Johnny's garlic seasoning.  Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.  Remove foil and bake another 30 minutes.  Remove from oven and allow to sit for 10 minutes.  Run a knife around the edge of pan and remove springform.  Slice and serve.  Serves: 4-6.

*This can also be made in an 8x8-inch baking pan.

Jenn's Notes: I made this exactly as I typed it above and it is Incredible.  It is also amazing leftover.

  7. I'm kind of confused about how the crescent rolls go in! Did you just let it hang out ? (Sorry I'm sure it's obvious and I'm just not getting it!)

    1. I love questions :) No, don't let them hang over the edge. You just want to cover the bottom of the pan (and then the top of the pan). You can tear the dough into pieces so it will fit and overlap some of the pieces, if necessary. Does that make sense?

  13. Hi there! I'm in Australia, and I'm just wondering - what are crescent rolls? Are they some sort of pastry, or a brand of bread rolls?

I just stumbled across your page from Pintrest - and I think I'm going to be spending a while on here! :)

    1. Hi, I actually have this in my oven right now and it smells amazing. A package of crescent rolls are a bread dough that come in a can. They are buttery and flaky and delicious. I have seen homemade recipes for crescent rolls. I haven't tried them, but I bet it would work just the same.

      Here is an example recipe:

  14. Do you think the recipe would be ok without the eggs? My husband and I don't like eggs, but everything else sounds delicious!

    1. You can't actually taste the eggs in this and they help everything hold together, but I think it would still be delicious without them.

  15. Hi, Can you add a dressing to it like mayo or something? If so, would you add it before or after it cooks?

    1. If you are worried about the sandwich being dry, it isn't. I don't think it needs any dressing on it, but you could try it.

  16. This was wonderful! I accidentally ate most of the spinach meant for this meal in a salad. So my sandwich skimped in that department. But it was WONDERFUL still! Next time I will have more spinach on hand, and I will ditch the oregano; the italian seasoning is plenty for me. This is a KEEPER!!!!Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing!!!

  17. This looks amazing. Forgive my ignorance but why do you need the 3 eggs in the middle?

  18. Hi Jenn!
I've made this sandwich twice. It tastes really great. My only problem is that when I cut it, a lot of watery liquid comes out. I guess it's from the spinach. Does anybody else have this problem or a solution?
    Thanks

    1. Liz - I do get some watery liquid, but not a lot. It's probably from the spinach and deli meat. It's never bothered me, but you could try letting the sandwich cool a little longer and maybe some of the liquid will absorb back into the other ingredients? Sorry - I don't really have a solution.
